The Story of Blue Dove

Hi, loves! I hope y’all have had a wonderful week and that you have a few minutes to sit and stay a while because I have a story to share with you.  The story of Blue Dove.  You know, it occurred to me recently that I’m always telling some aspect of the story of Blue Dove in one way or another.  However, I realized that it wasn’t all in one place!  If you’ve ever wondered how the name was chosen, the symbolism behind the logo, how and where I draw inspiration, or how the design process actually works, you’re in the right place.  If you ever wanted to know about me, Emily, owner-designer-extraordinaire, well, you’ve also come to the right place. :)

 The Beginning

As many of you know, I married my high school sweetheart, Matt, nearly 20 years ago (this fall)!  We have been blessed with two wonderful children, our son Ty, 7, and our daughter Lexi, 5.  Throw in our two dogs, Pegasus and Zeus, and we have a full and crazy household!  We live in God’s country, Austin, Texas, and enjoy the idyllic surroundings of our neck of the woods.  I am also a mortgage consultant by day, so Blue Dove is really my fun and creative happy place!

A few years ago, the idea of creating my own clothing brand was, just that, an idea.  I knew I wanted to do something fun, something creative and special, something that was just me.  While I had all of these amazing ideas ready to go on the design spectrum, I found that it took me quite a while to find the energy to research the technical and financial side to the business. Once I did, though, I was off to the races with a full drawing pad of ideas!  Best yet, I had my mission and goal very clearly defined.  I wanted to create timeless pieces that were unique and affordable without compromising on the finest fabrics and most exquisite details.

So in January 2014, Blue Dove was born and I held my first sale in May 2015, ‘Forget Me Not.’ Since that first sale, Blue Dove has released over 60 designs for all seasons for both boys and girls, and all the while stayed committed to fine quality, unique designs and affordable price points.  I am very proud to offer these timeless, unique yet classic, age-appropriate options for all children.  I want kids to be kids and I hope that my clothing brings more options to all of you who want to #letthembelittle just a bit longer!

The Meaning Behind the Name

The story and meaning behind the name and my logo are incredibly personal and sacred to me as it pays tribute to very special people in my life.  The Blue is for autism awareness, in honor of my SweetT (my son, Ty).  The Dove is in memory of my mother who passed away when I was a child.  The leaf in the dove’s mouth symbolizes my mom’s promise that she will live on through my babies.  Her promise that even though she is not with me anymore, that good days are to come, and that I will be okay and can accomplish anything that comes my way.  The heart between the words is for Matt, the love of my life.

Inspiration and Design

People ask me all the time where I draw inspiration for my designs.  I wish I could give you a more specific answer, but the truth is: everywhere.  Literature, photographs, family, smells, childhood memories, taste; everything is fair game!  This is part of what makes designing and creating beautiful children’s clothing so much fun.  I love to play with ideas and designs and the biggest reward for me is seeing all of the beautiful happy faces come to life while wearing my creations!  Managing the design process itself is not for the faint of heart. :)  From concept to in-hand, ready to sell, each piece can take a minimum of six months to finalize.  Everything from fabric availability to customs delays plays a role in the design timeline.  In the past, I was working a season ahead, but lately I have been working about one year ahead in order to meet demand!

Near and Dear

I couldn’t tell the story of Blue Dove without sharing more about my favorite and most sentimental release, ‘Hummingbird.’  It was designed for my mom.  When I was a child, I made an art project that featured a hummingbird and, to this day, I will always remember how she treasured it. As you can imagine, it would be impossible to have just one favorite.  ‘Unconditionally,’ ‘Peace on Earth,’ ‘Wren,’ ‘Lady Mary,’ ‘Love Glows,’ and ‘Sweet Pea’ also hold a very special place in my heart.

Classic and Signature Collections

We are always changing and growing here at Blue Dove.  The phenomenal growth that we have had over the past year alone has been humbling and so exciting for me!  I am thrilled to announce that Blue Dove will now offer two collections, Classic and Signature.  Our Classic collection is handmade and features lovingly thought out classic styles, both embroidered and smocked.  This collection will always be priced at less than $50 shipped.  Our Signature collection consists of more exclusive items.  They are also handmade, but are more unique and made in less quantities.  Our Signature collection will feature luxurious and exquisite fabrics and the most detailed embroidery work!

It’s a Family Thing...

Now this is part of the story that brings me to you. Each and every one of you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for being a part of my Blue Dove family and for supporting me and each other along the way.  I love seeing the way our Blue Dove story is unfolding with every new customer, a new memory made, a friendship created, or a silly photo someone has posted.

We all get by with a little help from our friends and I know many of us have experienced or witnessed the fact that Blue Dove friends are the best kind of friends and that #bluedovelove is very, very real.  I’d love to know, what are your favorite Blue Dove designs and why?  If you’d like to share, please leave us a note in the comments section. Until next time!

XO,

Emily

  • What a beautiful story! So glad you followed your heart in so many ways, and continue to do so! My favorite collection, so far, is Tiny Dancer, as dance is my history and, it seems, my future, with my own little girl. It was also my introduction to the #bluedovelove. :) Best of luck, Emily!

  • Blue dove has been more than just a precious clothing line for my family. I’ve loved so many of these gorgeous designs! And stock piled everyone I could find! Loves me and lady Mary are at the top because of my precious baby girl. I am sad our rainbow baby never got to wear her Noah’s ark, but will cherish it forever. This group of fantastic loving caring women has been a God send. The affection and support each of you have shown my precious family and Honoring Lacey and her legacy. I truly love each of you. I wear my necklace daily and treasure it so much! Thank you for sharing and Thank you Emily for bringing us all together!

  • Oh sweet, wonderful Emily! Thank you for loving your mama (who I know is smiling down and so very proud of you), for loving your guy and your sweet kiddos so much, and for sharing your loving creative heart with all of us? I love ALL Blue Dove but,if I had to choose favorites…I will always love Imogene! But a few of the dresses have become favorites, when I wasn’t looking lol. Secret Garden (because the tiny floral reminds me of dresses made for me by my seamstress grandmothers),Wren (because foster care/adoption is so close to my heart as a long time pediatric nurse),Miss Georgia (maybe because I have a teachers heart) we will never part with these! #bluedoveforlife
